SPORTS SHORTS: MHS sophomores suffer 0-4 stretch

The Marshalltown sophomore baseball team suffered four straight defeats to start the week, falling twice to both Ames and Urbandale.

The Bobcats (3-19-1) opened with a pair of Central Iowa Conference Northern Division losses at Ames on Monday, 7-1 and 4-1. Ben Rebik had an RBI double while Kyler Ladehoff had two of Marshalltown's five hits in the opening game. Joe Rebik and Jeffrey Miron both added singles, and Luke Severson scored the lone run. Sam Rogers took the loss, allowing six runs - two earned - on two hits and five walks in three innings.

Miron went 2-for-3 to lead MHS in a 4-1 loss to Ames in the nightcap. Jack Greene, Brandin Chaloupek and losing pitcher Peyton Williams each had singles. Williams scored the Bobcats' only run.

Jordan Smith had two of Marshalltown's six hits, including a double, in a 9-1 loss to Urbandale in Tuesday's opener. Greene doubled and scored, while additional singles came from Joe Rebik, Chaloupek, Greene and Ladehoff. Greene got the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs - three earned - on four hits and five walks in 1 2/3 innings.

Joe Rebik was 2-for-3 while Ben Rebik doubled and scored in the Bobcats' 6-1 loss in the second game. Severson had the only other hit for MHS. Smith allowed six runs on 11 hits, walking one and striking out one in 6 1/3 innings.

Next up for the MHS sophomores is a doubleheader Friday at Ankeny.

MCC hosting summer volleyball camp

The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team and head coach Chris Brees will be hosting its 2013 Summer Volleyball Camp in July at the Student Activity Center on the MCC campus.

The camp will be open to players grades 3-12 but divided into three separate sessions. Grades 3-5 will meet July 20-21 from 8:30 a.m.-noon and from 1-4 p.m.

Athletes in grades 6-8 and 9-12 will both meet July 24-26. The younger group will go from 1-4 p.m., and the high schoolers will go from 8:30 a.m.-noon. An open gym from 6-8 p.m. will be open for all campers each day as well.

Each camp will focus on individual skill development with integration of team drills. Coach Brees will run the camp while being assisted by five NCAA Division I volleyball players in addition to current MCC Tigers.
