New Arrivals

Aaron and Heather Schmidt, of Marshalltown, are the parents of a son, Myles Matthew Schmidt, born at 9:53 p.m. June 4 at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center weighing 6 pounds 3 ounces and measuring 18.5 inches long. Myles joins big brother Ethan Schmidt, 8. Grandparents are Steven and Marilyn Schmidt, of Marshalltown; Dan and Susan Bussell, of LeClaire; Shane and Sandy McFarland, of Haverhill; and Kenny and Heather Holle, of Creston.

Jarret and Dawna Heil, of Haverhill, are the parents of a twin sons Jack Henry Heil, born at 8:22 a.m., and Nolan Graham Heil, born at 8:24 p.m., June 24 at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center. Jack and Nolan join sister Lillian. Grandparents are Jeff Heil, Deb Heil, Joe Petzel and Lori Petzel.

Breianna Alday, 1907 S. Fourth Ave., made an initial appearance on a failure to appear for a contempt hearing. She will represent herself before the court in this matter. The contempt hearing for failure to complete a batterer's education program was rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. Aug. 14. Alday was released on her own recognizance.

July 5

Mario Torres, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a operating while intoxicated-first offense charge. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. July 25. Torres was released on his own recognizance. The court ordered as a term of release that he obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days of today's date.

Valerian Basilius, 413 N. Third St., made an initial appearance on a public intoxicated charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days of today's date.

Michelle Grommet, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a trespass charge. She pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial conference is set for 9 a.m. Aug. 27 in Magistrate Court.

Barry Barmelio, 111 N. Seventh St. Apt. #3, made an initial appearance on a public intoxication charge, a trespass charge and a harassment-third degree charge. He pleaded guilty to all charges. On the public intoxication and harassment charges the fine was $65 each with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75 for each charge. The fine on the trespass charge was $65 with a $22.75 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $272.75. All payments are due within 30 days of today's date. No-contact orders were issued for the protected parties.

Anthony Frederick, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a open container charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $200 with a $70 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $330, due within 30 days of today's date.

Incidents

On Tuesday, Jerry Duane Waltemeyer, of State Center, reported the theft of a three-wheeled bicycle from 512 May St. Estimated value of loss was $200.

On Wednesday, Leslie George Osborne Jr., of Brooklyn, reported hit-and-run damage to the rear van door on a 1989 Chevy Sportvan while parked in Marshalltown. Estimated value of damage was $125.

On Tuesday, Travis Jacob Hassen, 305 N. Seventh St., reported scratch damage to the front, driver's side window on a Dodge Ram pickup while parked at Walmart, 2802 S. Center St., Estimated value of damage was $300.

On Tuesday, Patricia Ann Kirner, 1308 W. Main St., reported the theft of a Schwinn 24-inch bicycle from her residence. Estimated value of loss was $300.

On June 25, Travis Hassen, 305 N. Seventh St., was cited for domesticated animal disturbing the peace.

On Tuesday, Randall R. Rettig, 909 S. Second Ave., was cited for theft-fifth degree from Earl May.

Arrests

On Wednesday, Vanessa Corine White, 2001 S. Wallace Ave. C, was arrested for bad checks.

On Tuesday, Christopher Patrick Benton, 607 E. Olive St. Apt. #4, was arrested for driving while revoked.

Accidents

On Wednesday, a pickup driven by Gary Ray Stier, 517 N. Second St., was backing into his driveway due to poor visibility in exiting the drive when it ran over Isiah Price, 508 N. Second St., who was riding a bicycle in his driveway. Price was transported to Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center with injuries and then transported by air ambulance to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines.

Grundy County Sheriff

Arrests

On Monday, Terri Shipman, age 44, of Des Moines, was arrested at the sheriff's office and charged with theft-fifth degree. Shipman pleaded guilty and was released.

On Sunday, Jose Avalos-Covarrubias, age 21, of Marshalltown, was arrested by the Marshalltown Police Department on a Grundy County warrant charging him with failure to appear. He posted bond and was released.

On Sunday, Kristin Chien, age 24, of Cedar Falls, was arrested on Highway 20 and charged with operating while intoxicated-second offense and child endangerment. She was released on promise to appear.

On June 29, NIcole Macheak, age 29, of Iowa Falls, was arrested on Highway 20 and charged with operating while intoxicated-first offense. She was released on promise to appear.

On June 26, Drew Cranston, age 28, of Waterloo, was arrested by Black Hawk County authorities on a Grundy County warrant charging him with burglary-third degree. He is being held in lieu of bond.

On June 25, Bryan Daniel, age 29, of Storm Lake, was arrested on Highway 20 and charged with operating while intoxicated-first offense and driving while license is revoked. He is being held in lieu of bond.

On June 8, Carl Graham, age 23, of Des Moines, was arrested on Highway 14 north of 270th Street for operating while intoxicated-first offense. He was released on promise to appear.

Accidents

On Wednesday, a car driven by Leonard Kennedy, age 40, of Grundy Center, was eastbound on D-35 east of Highway 14 when it struck a deer that entered the roadway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Kennedy car was estimated at $2,500.

On Sunday, a vehicle driven by Marc Moore, age 33, of La Porte City, was eastbound on 160th Street when the driver looked down for a moment and when he looked back his vehicle collided with the rear of a car driven by James Huberg, age 66, of Dike, which had slowed to make a turn. No injuries were reported. Moore was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $4,000 each.

On June 29, a vehicle driven by Daniel Propst, age 60, of Marshalltown, was westbound on Highway 20 when it struck a deer in the roadway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Propst vehicle was estimated at $3,500.

On June 23, a vehicle driven by Bryce Dall, age 15, of Dike, was northbound on T-55 south of Dike when it struck a deer that entered the roadway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Dall vehicle was estimated at $3,500.

On June 20, a vehicle driven by Robert Ash, age 45, of Grundy Center, was southbound on T-37 north of Grundy Center when it struck a deer that entered the roadway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Ash vehicle was estimated at $1,800.

On June 18, a vehicle driven by Jamie Aikey, age 39, of Holland, was westbound on Highway 20 when it struck a deer in the road. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Aikey vehicle was estimated at $10,000.

On June 11, a car driven by Vettre Readout, age 42, of Ackley, was eastbound on 150th Street west of Echo Avenue when it entered the south ditch where it rolled over landing on its top. No injuries were reported. Readout was cited for operating while intoxicated. Damage to the Readout car was estimated at $7,000.

On May 8, a vehicle driven by Chad Modlin, age 37, of New Hartford, was northbound on Highway 14 south of 170th Street when the driver lost control, entered the east ditch, crossed over 170th Street striking a fence and then continued northbound in the ditch for several yards and then came back onto Highway 14 where it came to a stop. No injuries were reported. Modlin was cited for operating while intoxicated-third offense. Damage to the Modlin vehicle was estimated at $2,000.

On April 27, a vehicle driven by Trina King, age 44, of Boone, was eastbound on Highway 175 when it left the roadway and entered the south ditch. No injuries were reported. Damage to the King vehicle was estimated at $3,000.
