Police arrested a Texas man for smashing another person's car into the Salon Diana Sunday evening.
Capt. Brian Batterson, with the Marshalltown Police Department, said police arrested Jesus Covarruvias-Escamilla, 22, of Houston, for first-degree criminal mischief, a Class C felony; second-degree theft, a Class D felony; and operating while intoxicated, a serious misdemeanor.
Batterson said police arrived on scene of the parking lot of the business,1501 S. 17th Ave., where witnesses were detaining Covarruvias-Escamilla.
Covarruvias-Escamilla allegedly jumped into a truck with the keys in the ignition.
He claimed assailants were pursuing him, Batterson said, but police were unable to identify or corroborate any such assailants with witnesses.
When he saw a woman in the parking lot, Covarruvias-Escamilla claims he swerved to avoid hitting her and crashed into the side of the building, Batterson said.
Although reports do not indicate the exact damage to the truck and the building, to warrant first-degree criminal mischief, Iowa Code requires that damage exceed $10,000.
Covarruvias-Escamilla refused a urine test at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center where he was transported for minor injuries following the crash, Batterson said.
A Class C felony is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
