Ugandan Orphan’s Choir to perform at ‘Taste of Africa’

July 12, 2013
By MIKE DONAHEY - Staff Writer (mdonahey@timesrepublican.com) , Times-Republican

A week of activities involving an ancient city and two African countries half-a-world away, will culminate in a sharing of African foods and a performance by the renown Ugandan Orphan's Choir at 7 p.m., July 21 at the Evangelical Free Church of Marshalltown.

The choir consists of children who have been rescued from poverty in the East African country and are now a voice for others.

Marshalltown is but one stop on its extensive Midwest tour and gives audiences an opportunity to provide children in developing countries with an education and hope for the future.

The choir performance is open to the public with a free will offering welcomed.

Athens, the Republic of Sierra Leone and the Republic of Uganda, will all have played a role in church activities leading up to that evening's event, said Pastor Brent Thiesen of Marshalltown and youth minister at the church.

"The families involved with the first century Athens-themed Vacation Bible School will be celebrating a week of study while learning God's word from St. Paul," Thiesen said. "They will also be honoring Kayla Hatch, of Marshalltown. She is serving as a midwife in Sierra Leone and works to share the Gospel with all.
