Dr. Daniel Johnson and wife, Dr. Michelle Johnson, opened their new dental practice, Marshalltown Family Dentistry, two months ago, and the couple said they are pleased with the initial results.

"We are busy and taking new patients," Daniel said.

Daniel, of Roland, and Michelle, of Green Bay, Wis., purchased Dr. Richard Squiers' practice and are operating out of his office at 206 E. State St., Marshalltown.

Additionally, they retained Squiers' staff.

"Dr. Squiers practiced here 46 years, and we were pleased the opportunity came up to purchase his practice," Daniel said.

The Johnsons are 2012 graduates of the University of Iowa Dental School.

The couple practices general dentistry for all ages.

"We do about everything," Daniel said. "That includes standard dental procedures as well as dentures, implants and root canals."

Daniel has earned recognition for outstanding work in prosthodontics. Michelle has received accolades for skills in operative dentistry.

The couple was exploring locales to begin a practice when a dentist friend of Daniel's suggested Marshalltown.

"He told me we should come here," Daniel said.

The couple was convinced Marshalltown was the place to be, specifically after learning a number of area dentists were "slowing down" and not taking new patients.

"Dr. David Clark (of Marshalltown) among other dentists, told us the area needed dentists and that Marshalltown would be a good place to practice," Daniel said.

We definitely wanted to open a practice where there was room to grow, and not compete with other dentists," Michelle said.

Daniel earned his undergraduate degree from Iowa State University, and has served five years in the U.S. Army Reserves and three years active duty in the Army, including a deployment to Kuwait.

Michelle completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

The couple enjoys the outdoors, bicycling, running and frequenting local restaurants.

The Johnsons reside in Marshalltown with their son, Rowan, 1. They are expecting their second child.

"We are happy to be in Marshalltown," Daniel said.

The dentistry's business hours are 8-noon and 1-5, Monday-Thursday and 8-noon on Friday.
