Woman charged with domestic abuse

Charlene Burns, 53, of Marshalltown, was charged with serious domestic abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor, Friday. Burns was taken into custody after she allegedly struck her common law husband with an aluminum cane. The man was reportedly cut and bleeding from above his left eye.

Alvarez

Jesus Mario Alvarez, 34, of Marshalltown, was arrested on three counts of child endangerment and drunk driving Friday. Alvarez was pulled over by police and according to a report had watery, bloodshot eyes and admitted to drinking. He refused a field sobriety test, and was charged with operating while intoxicated. Alvarez had three children in the car with him, ages 6, 7 and 13. The children were not harmed.

All four charges are aggravated misdemeanors.

Man in jail after allegedly choking ex-girlfriend

Edward D Stokes Jr., of Marshalltown, was arrested Sunday after he allegedly choked a woman. One day after his 18th birthday, Stokes, according to police, went to the home of an ex-girlfriend and threatened to damage her property if she did not talk to him.

Once the conversation began, Stokes became enraged that the woman had a new boyfriend and allegedly choked her. Police state that the woman had red marks on her neck consistent with being strangled.

Stokes is charged with violation of a no-contact order and domestic assault strangulation, a Class D felony.

Wal-Mart customer allegedly endangered child

Ryan Jason Papakee, 41, of Tama, was arrested Friday after allegedly placing a 2-year-old at risk.

Papakee was shopping at Wal-Mart when customers noticed he was staggering and had trouble speaking. His blood-alcohol concentration was 0.295 - more than three times the legal limit.

Papakee's niece, who was in a stroller, was in his care at the time.

Papakee is charged with public intoxication, a simple misdemeanor; and child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Monday

Eric Maurice Mayes, 812 E. State St., made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge and a loud noises from vehicle charge. He pleaded guilty to both charges. On the driving under suspension charge the fine was $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50. The fine on the loud noises from vehicle charge was $50 with a $17.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $127.50. On both charges the court allowed for monthly installment payments of $50 beginning Aug. 27 until the debt is paid.

Debra Lynn Walker, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a false reports charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle her case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. Aug. 16. Walker was released on her own recognizance.

Incidents

On Sunday, hit-and-run damage to the left side rear bumper on a vehicle and the left rear bumper on another vehicle while both were parked at 403 S. Third St. Estimated value of damage was $6,000 and $4,000, respectively.

On Saturday, Stephanie Lara, 312 N. Third St. Apt. #2, reported a broken window at her residence. Estimated value of damage was $200.

On Saturday, David W. Hessenius, 1509 W. State St., reported the theft of a check in the amount of $159 from his residence.

On Friday, an employee with Larry's Towing, 812 N. Fourth Ave., reported damage to a stop ahead sign which belonged to Marshall County during an accident at 3900 Governor Road. Estimated value of damage was $100.

On Thursday, hit-and-run damage to a traffic light at 200 S. Center St., was reported. Damage to the light was estimated at $1,000.

On July 22, damage to a padlock at a fenced-in sub station area and the theft of 160 feet of ground copper wire belonging to Alliant Utilities was reported. Estimated value of damage was $610.

On Sunday, Lance Mandell Walker, address unknown, was arrested for public intoxication and theft-third degree-enhanced.

On Sunday, Antonio Rodriguez Chavoya, 310 S. Third St., was arrested for operating while intoxicated-third offense and driving while revoked.

On Saturday, Lance Mandell Walker, address unknown, was arrested for public intoxication.

On Saturday, Brandon Lee Kelly, 1009 W. Nevada St., was arrested for possession of a Schedule I controlled substance with the intent to deliver and carrying weapons.

On Friday, Matthew Vincent Tyda, 109 S. 16th St., was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Friday, Juan Raul Velez, 108 N. Third Ave., was arrested for violation of a protective order.

On Friday, Lolita Lyna Good, 305 N. 15th Ave., was arrested for violation of a protective order.

Accidents

On Sunday, a minivan driven by Antonio Rodriguez-Chavoya, 310 S. Third St., was southbound on South Third Street when it drifted into a legally parked Ford Focus and also a legally parked Ford Taurus and then left the scene. No injuries were reported. Rodriguez-Chavoya was cited for leaving the scene of an accident-damage to vehicle. Damage to the Rodriguez-Chavoya minivan was estimated at $3,000 while the Ford Focus received an estimated $6,000 in damage and the Ford Taurus an estimated $4,000 in damage.

On Friday, a car driven by Randy Hanson, 505 S. Sixth St., was northbound in the 10 block of North Third Avenue and attempted to turn left onto East State Street when it collided with a car driven by April Marie Slechta, of Victor, in the intersection. No injuries were reported. Hanson was cited for failure to yield upon left turn, failure to have a valid driver's license and violation of financial liability-accident. Damage to the Hanson car was estimated at $1,500 while the Slechta car received an estimated $2,800 in damage.

On Friday, a pickup driven by Adam Wayne Larson, 705 Woodbury St., was exiting a parking spot off the north-south alley from his residence when it collided with the front passenger side quarter panel of a minivan which was illegally parked in front of a garage at 707 Woodbury St. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Larson pickup was estimated at $500 while the illegally parked minivan received an estimated $1,700 in damage.

On Thursday, a car driven by Marla Kaye Smith, Westminster, Colo., was eastbound on East Linn Street near the intersection with South First Avenue when, due to the driver being unsure of where to turn, it attempted a lane change and collided with the rear, passenger side door and quarter panel of a minivan driven by Danielle Renee Beyer, of Grinnell, which was also traveling east on Linn Street. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Smith car was estimated at $1,500 while the Beyer minivan received an estimated $1,000 in damage.
