GLADBROOK - Aug. 12 will be a big day for Gladbrook Mayor Keith Sash at the Iowa State Fair.

In fact, it will be his day at the fair.

Sash will be honored as the Iowan of the Day that day with several special privileges. He is one of 10 people throughout the state to receive the honor at the fair this year, one for each day.

Gladbrook Mayor Keith Sash is being honored as Iowan of the Day Aug. 12 at the Iowa State Fair.

"That was definitely a surprise when I got the call," Sash said. "It's an honor you appreciate getting."

Sash said he is not sure who nominated him for the award, but a committee from the Iowa State Blue Ribbon Foundation ended up selecting him for the honor.

The retired farmer has a legacy of community service as he is a past Tama County supervisor, and a past member of the Gladbrook School Board, Mid-Iowa Co-op board and Tama County 4-H Fair Board.

He is currently involved in several area groups including the Tama County Economic Development board and the Tama County Pork Producers.

"I've always been involved in community activities," Sash said.

Representing the town of Gladbrook at the fair will be special to him, he said.

"Gladbrook is a great community and the people are very supportive of all community activities," Sash said.

As an example of the supportive nature of the area people, he said they have raised $600,000 for the new fire and ambulance station in town in the past three months.

"That shows the pride in the community," Sash said.

Sash will be introduced at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 12 on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage at the fair. He'll also receive a $200 cash prize, use of a golf cart for the day, a hotel stay and grandstand tickets as part of this honor.

Sash, and his wife JoAnne, have three grown children and seven grandchildren. He has been mayor of Gladbrook for four years.

"It's not just an honor for me, but for the whole community," Sash said.

The state fair runs from Aug. 8 to 18.
