An inmate staying at a work-release facility in Marshalltown failed to return today as scheduled and as of Thursday afternoon remained at large.

Facility Director Jon Groteluschen confirmed that inmate Casey Sheriff, 40, failed to return to the facility by 8 a.m. today. Sheriff, who has been living at the facility for about a week, left with permission Wednesday night to go to work and was required to return after his shift ended.

He is a 6-foot tall and 292-pound white man with multiple tattoos. He is currently serving a 5-year sentence for domestic assault stemming from an incident in May 2012. Sheriff, according to court records, violated a no-contact order by entering his ex-girlfriend's apartment where he attempted to choke the woman and then punched her in the mouth.

It was Sheriff's third conviction for domestic assault.

Groteluschen could not recall if Sheriff had failed to return on time previously.

Anyone with information on Sheriff's whereabouts should contact Marshalltown Police at 754-5725.
