MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT - People come from throughout the country to attend the annual Meskwaki Powwow on the Meskwaki Settlement.

This year will be the 99th installment of the event, which features native regalia, dancing, music, food, crafts and historical items unique to the Sac & Fox Tribe. The four-day event begins Thursday.

It is also a unique event in the state as the Meskwaki Settlement is the only Native American settlement in Iowa. The powwow celebrations were formed as sort of a last hurrah to the summer.

The 99th Annual Meskwaki Powwow starts Thursday and runs through Sunday at the powwow grounds at the settlement.

"Traditionally, this has been our last gathering before we split off to our winter camps," said Johnathan Buffalo, historical preservation director with the tribe.

History will be on display everywhere one looks, from the clothing to the performances.

"We're a very old culture and we are thousands of years old on this continent," Buffalo said. "Some of the dances and songs are very ancient, but we are still modernized."
