A spill of approximately 500 gallons of a syrup-based substance known as Rim Guard closed the road at the corner of Second and Washington streets in Marshalltown near the railroad tracks at approximately 9:45 p.m. Tuesday night. A tank of the syrupy substance used in the automotive industry was broken into at Ben’s Tire releasing the substance onto the road. Ben’s Tire Owner Kelcy Benscoter said this is the second time vandals have broken into the tank. She said the substance is slick but not dangerous. Marshalltown firefighters put sand on the substance and police were also on the scene.
