ST. LOUIS - Northern Iowa senior outside hitter Macy Ubben has been named to the preseason all-Missouri Valley Conference volleyball team, the league announced recently.
Ubben, an Ackley native and former all-state selection from AGWSR, was a first-team all-MVC recipient last fall in addition to her first-team Scholar Athlete honors.
Ubben and the Panthers have been picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley in a preseason poll of the league's coaches, trailing only Wichita State. The Shockers received eight of the 10 first-place votes, while Missouri State got the other two but was still one point behind UNI in the poll.
Ubben was the only Panther selected to the six-player preseason all-MVC squad. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter finished fourth on the UNI team with 2.52 kills, 0.53 blocks and 2.36 digs per set last season.
In 2008, Ubben was the Times-Republican's All-Area Volleyball Player of the Year after leading AGWSR to its first-ever state tournament appearance and a runner-up finish. Ubben was named captain of the all-tournament team, first-team all-state by the Iowa Girls' Coaches Association, and the Most Outstanding Player in the NICL West Division.
Northern Iowa advanced to its seventh consecutive NCAA tournament last season after finishing second in the MVC.
Drake, beginning its first season under new head coach Darrin McBroom, was polled last in the 10-team league. Conference newcomer Loyola was ranked sixth, replacing Creighton upon its departure for the Big East Conference.
Northern Iowa's season begins with a match a day Friday-Sunday at the Utah Classic in Salt Lake City. The Panthers play their home opener Sept. 4 against Iowa State.
