CLINTON - A fast start allowed for an experimental finish for the Marshalltown Community College volleyball team, which opened Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 rout of Clinton on Monday night.
MCC marched to a 25-9 win in the opening set and evened its overall record at 2-2 by finishing off the Cougars by set scores of 25-19 and 25-23.
"We were able to try some different things tonight," said Tigers coach Chris Brees. "It was beneficial for us to get everyone some quality playing time so early into the season."
The match was the first of the season for Clinton (0-1, 0-1).
Miranda Smith led MCC with 14 kills in the ICCAC Division II opener. Fellow freshman Reeba Box contributed 10 kills and Katelyn Yauslin had nine.
Libero player Ashley Salgado tallied 37 digs while Alyssa Whitmore had 13 more. Box contributed 15 digs and two service aces, and Smith led the defense with two solo blocks at the net.
Setter Sam Hinrichs notched 30 assists and served up one ace in the sweep.
Marshalltown CC will play its home opener on Thursday night, hosting Grand View University at 7 p.m. at the Student Activity Center.
