NEWTON - As the Marshalltown boys golf team is coming to learn, sometimes limiting the damage on some holes can be just as important as making the big shot on others.
Troubled by some tough holes on the back nine, the Bobcats tallied a team score of 326 to finished fifth out of nine teams at the Newton Cardinal Invitational at Westwood Golf Course Thursday.
Led by four linksters in the top-10, Southeast Polk topped the field with a 301, while Mason City was 15 strokes back. Indianola and Newton tied for third at 323 apiece.
"We had an up and down day. Westwood has a few trick holes, especially on the back nine, and we made some double and triple bogeys that hurt our overall score," MHS coach Lucas Johnson said. "As a team, we're still learning how to put ourselves in positions on the course where bogey is the worst score that can happen."
Indianola's Adam Heater fired a two-under 69 (36-33) with five birdies and an eagle to finish three strokes ahead of Southeast Polk's Zak Karns. Michael Schrempf paced the Bobcats with a 76, losing a cardback to the Rams' Brandon Nordeman (fourth) and Jon Hartung (fifth) by virtue of a bogey on hole 11 to their pars. All three golfers shot a 76.
"Michael had another excellent day and played well from tee to green," Johnson said. "He gave himself a lot of chances at birdie, but only got one to drop. It's only a matter of time before his putter gets hot and once it does, he's going to shoot some impressive scores."
