AMES - The Iowa State men's soccer club team proved to be more than just a warm-up for Marshalltown Community College.
The Tigers received a challenge, and eventually they rose to meet it.
Juan Carillo scored his team-leading fourth goal to match Iowa State's fast start, and Hernan Lopez netted the game-winner - the only goal of the second half - to help the Tigers pick up a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Lopez scored in the 71st minute on an assist from Roberto Velazquez to break the 1-all tie and give MCC (4-1-1) its second consecutive one-goal win with Wednesday's showdown against NJCAA Division I No. 4-ranked Iowa Western looming.
It's a rematch of last year's Region XI championship game, which finished in a 1-0 Tiger triumph to send the team to the national tournament.
Iowa State took the initial lead Saturday with its lone goal in the 14th minute of the match - the first pre-intermission goal allowed by the Tigers so far this season. Carillo countered in the 34th minute on an assist from Jaime Agujetas to even things up for MCC going into halftime.
MCC goalkeeper Julian Pena made a career-best five saves for the win, while Andrew Waterfall stopped the only shot he faced in net for the Tigers.
Wednesday's Iowa Community College Athletic Conference clash with Iowa Western in Council Bluffs will begin at 4 p.m.
