Tiger netters sustain two more defeats in Nebraska

COLUMBUS, Neb. - The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team suffered an 0-2 finishing day and an 0-4 weekend at the New World Inn/Jimmy John's Classic hosted by Central (Neb.) Community College.

The Tigers were swept by NJCAA Division II No. 5-ranked host Central in their final match of the tournament Saturday, falling 25-16, 25-23, 25-19. The Raiders were led by Skyler Erickson's 15 kills and nine digs.

Katelyn Yauslin led MCC with six kills and Amanda Keane had five. Libero player Ashley Salgado and fellow defensive specialist Alyssa Whitmore combined to tally 67 digs in the loss.

McCook (Neb.) CC got revenge on Marshalltown in Saturday's opener, jumping out to a two-game lead and finally prevailing in a five-set thriller, 25-17, 28-26, 22-25, 20-25, 17-15. It marked the first win of the season for the Indians (1-12), who had been swept by MCC in a previous tournament meeting Aug. 24 in Beatrice, Neb.

Miranda Smith and Yauslin both notched 12 kills to lead Marshalltown, while Sam Hinrichs and Smith had five blocks apiece. Hinrichs handed out 36 assists.

Salgado finished with a career-high 78 digs in the match, and Whitmore had her best yet with 44.

The Tigers (3-6, 1-0) return to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play on Wednesday with a trip to Estherville to face Iowa Lakes (1-9, 1-1) at 7 p.m. MCC hosts the Tiger Invite on Friday and Saturday at the Student Activity Center.
