STATE CENTER - The Grundy Center volleyball team continued its unbeaten start to the season, scoring a three-set sweep of West Marshall in NICL West Division play on Thursday night.
The Spartans (6-0, 2-0) - ranked eighth in Thursday's Class 2A poll - prevailed by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-19 to collect their 28th consecutive conference victory. West Marshall, meanwhile, dipped to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in NICL West play. It was the Trojans' fifth straight defeat.
Jenn Davis led the Trojans with eight kills and Brandy Wilkey had six more. Alarie Craven totaled 19 assists and contributed 7-for-7 serving with an ace. Mackenzie Coberly went 10-for-10 serving with two aces, while Claire Underwood led the way with nine digs.
Grundy Center goes to the Aplington-Parkersburg Tournament on Saturday, while West Marshall takes to the East Marshall Tournament in Le Grand. The Trojans face Iowa Valley, 3A No. 2 Union and Benton Community in pool play.
South Tama 3, AGWSR 0
ACKLEY - Seizing its fourth straight victory, the South Tama volleyball team swept through AGWSR, 25-10, 25-16, 25-21, Thursday.
Ashley Sicard led the Cougars (2-4) with six kills, Madison Fryslie added five and Taylor Steinfeldt had four to go with three total blocks (two solo). Olivia Ingledue came up with 12 digs, while Kim Ellingson distributed 10 assists and connected on all 11 of her service attempts. Danielle Henning finished 9-for-9 on serve with an ace and eight assists.
No stats were available for the Trojans (6-3) by press time.
The Cougars will compete in the Aplington-Parkersburg Tournament Saturday. South Tama continues its extended road trip at South Hardin Tuesday.
South Hardin 3, East Marshall 1
ELDORA - Rebounding from an 0-4 start, the South Hardin volleyball team claimed its third straight victory by defeating East Marshall 3-1 Thursday.
Winning by a score of 27-25, 25-17, 22-25 and 25-8, the Tigers improved to 3-4 and 2-0 in the NICL West Division.
Claire Johnson led East Marshall (1-4, 0-2) with 14 kills and 10 digs as Kelsea Anderson connected on 16 of 17 service attempts with three aces. Ashley Allen had 14 digs and 14 assists, while Haley Long was 14-of-14 on serve with 11 assists. Madisen Hinegardner converted 10-of-11 on serve with an ace and 14 digs. Sam Earley and Allen each had five kills, while Meriel Leavy and Johnson each chipped in a block.
South Hardin stats were not available by press time.
The Mustangs host their own tournament Saturday starting at 9 a.m. East Marshall's bracket includes Roland-Story, Des Moines Christian and Tri-County. The other bracket features West Marshall, Union, Iowa Valley and Benton Community.
The Tigers continue their homestand at their own tournament Saturday.
Colo-NESCO 3, CAL 0
COLO - Caitlyn Riese racked up 16 kills, six blocks and three service aces in leading the Colo-NESCO Royals past CAL, 25-12, 25-14, 25-18, in the Iowa Star Conference opener.
The win ended a three-match losing streak for the Royals (5-4, 1-0), who will play in the South Hardin Classic on Saturday.
Brittnee Packer totaled 13 assists and McKenna Farren had 10 for the Royals. Kylie Sarver led the way with seven digs.
CAL dropped to 3-7 overall after falling in the conference opener.
