PREP VOLLEYBALL: West finishes ahead of East at Mustangs’ tourney

LE GRAND - West Marshall's finishing win over East Marshall separated the Trojans from the Mustangs in Saturday's East Marshall Tournament, as both teams finished 1-2 in pool play before squaring off to end the day.

West Marshall (3-11) racked up a 21-4, 21-10 triumph over its cross-county rival to close out a 2-2 day. The Trojans also defeated Benton Community in pool play (21-12, 23-21) having already fallen to Iowa Valley (21-13, 21-17) and Class 3A No. 2-ranked Union Community (21-10, 21-10).

The Trojans were led by Brandy Wilkey's 15 kills. Jenn Davis tallied 10 kills, Alarie Craven accumulated 42 assists, and Gabby Reyerson had four blocks. Mackenzie Coberly served 31-for-32 with six aces, and Claire Underwood paced the defense with 21 digs.

East Marshall's lone win on the day came in convincing fashion, a 21-8, 21-8 trouncing of Tri-County. The Mustangs (2-6) fell to Roland-Story (21-14, 21-13), 2A No. 15 Des Moines Christian (21-15, 21-16) and then West Marshall.

East Marshall was led by Claire Johnson's 16 kills, eight blocks and 19-for-22 serving with six aces. She also had 21 digs.

Ashley Allen had nine kills and 19 assists, Meriel Leavy added seven kills and six blocks, and Brooke Miller chipped in six kills. Madisen Hinegardner had a team-high 29 digs and served 14-for-14 with four aces, and Kelsea Anderson had 23 digs and served 22-for-23 with two aces. Haley Long led with 21 assists and was 13-for-13 serving with an ace, and Sam Earley was 9-for-9 with three service aces.

In the semifinals, Union defeated Roland-Story and Des Moines Christian topped Iowa Valley. The Union Knights won the tournament title over Des Moines Christian.

Both East and West Marshall are at home Tuesday night in NICL West Division play. The Mustangs entertain Gladbrook-Reinbeck while the Trojans host BCLUW.

Colo-NESCO volleyball winless at South Hardin

ELDORA - The Colo-NESCO volleyball team went 0-4 on Saturday at the South Hardin Classic, falling to 5-8 on the season.

The Royals were swept by Class 1A No. 5 Grandview Park Baptist (21-13, 21-10) and then fell in three to Gladbrook-Reinbeck, 21-11, 6-21, 15-12. Colo-NESCO lost twice consecutively to Greene County, falling 21-9, 22-20 and then 21-13, 19-21, 15-5.

Colo-NESCO hosts Clarksville in Iowa Star Conference play Tuesday.
