By producing infrastructure pieces such as box culverts and concrete piping, much of the work done by Cretex Concrete Products in Marshalltown is buried underground.

Wednesday was a day for that work to be spotlighted above ground as the company offered a tour to Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds and Iowa Department of Transportation Director Paul Trambino.

"We think it's wonderful that they are here," said Brent Klaiber, sales manager for the plant.

The Marshalltown Cretex plants employs more than 40 people and is one of five operating plants run by the company in Iowa. Most of the concrete projects made at Cretex stay in the state of Iowa.

"We continue to evolve and grow as a plant and it's been a great fit for Marshall County," said Ty Larsen, plant manager.

Visitors witnessed how they test the temperature and moisture content of the concrete.

Reynolds said companies like Cretex are very important to the infrastructure of the state.

"It's very impressive to see what they are doing here," Reynolds said. "I've seen what goes into the infrastructure underneath our roads."

One of the most high profile jobs Cretex has been a part of recently was producing a box culvert for Highway 9 in Mitchell County as part of an emergency project.

Reynolds said Gov. Terry Branstad and herself make an effort to visit various companies in Iowa routinely.

"We like to thank them for being in Iowa," Reynolds said.

Cretex is located at 2002 E. Olive St. on the eastern edge of Marshalltown.
