A Marshalltown man with long criminal history has been charged with first-degree murder.

Jeremy A. Gartin, 30, was charged this morning in the death of an adult male who has not been identified, said Police Chief Mike Tupper.

Max E. Nelson, Jr. 55, is charged with accessory after the fact, first-degree theft and abuse of a corpse, Tupper said.

Both men were originally held as material witnesses.

Police say an adult male was killed in Marshalltown Tuesday morning at 502 N. Fourth Ave.

An autopsy is scheduled for this morning and the name of the victim is expected to be released later after his identity has been confirmed.

Gartin is also charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

Nelson, the former publisher of the Marshall County Sun, was arrested on felony drug charges in May 2012. A trial in that case has been postponed several times.

Online court records show Gartin has a long criminal history including felony charges of willful injury, criminal mischief, possession of firearms and burglary.

Police say they were called to the residence about a suspicious death Tuesday morning. The death is still being investigated and evidence and information have been collected that confirms criminal action led to this death, police said.

No other people of interest are being sought in connection with this investigation.
