PELLA - Coming off its biggest win of the season Wednesday night, the Marshalltown Community College volleyball team kept momentum on its side Thursday when the Tigers traveled to Pella and picked up wins against the Central JV and the AIB JV.
MCC (14-12) needed four games to be the Dutch as the Tigers won 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22. Marshalltown then swept away AIB 25-12, 25-20, 25-12.
It was the fourth straight win for the Tigers. They also have won six of their last eight and reached 14 wins on the season, which was the number of victories they finished with in 2012.
"These were two big wins for us," said MCC coach Chris Brees. "Coming off of our biggest win of the season last night, the team was able to build on that and take two more tonight. We look to continue to get better this weekend at NIACC."
Sophomore Katelyn Yauslin had a season-high 19 kills in the win over Central, while freshman Miranda Smith finished with 11 kills. Freshman Reeba Box collected six kills and 11 digs, while freshman setter Sam Hinrichs delivered 28 assists and had nine digs and Alyssa Whitmore recorded a team-high 16 digs.
Ashley Salgado, who left the game early with a shoulder injury, had 11 digs in the opener and did not play against AIB in the nightcap. The severity Salgado's injury was unknown at press time.
Smith led the Tigers in the win over AIB. The Marshalltown High School graduate had eight kills, while Box and freshman Meghann Cole each had six. Whitmore took over for Salgado at libero and finished with 16 digs, while Hinrichs dished out 16 assists and added nine digs.
MCC will look to continue its winning streak with a pair of matches at the North Iowa Area Community College Tournament on Saturday. The Tigers open up against Dakota County Technical College at 9 a.m. followed by a rematch with Central College JV at 11 a.m.
