NT’s Watson nets runner-up finish at Wolverine Invite

Bradley’s third-place tally leads boys

DIKE - Facing tough competition against larger schools on Tuesday, North Tama's Abi Watson held her own at the Wolverine Invitiational.

The Redhawk junior who is ranked sixth in Class 1A ran her way to a second place finish and hit the line in 15 minutes, 33 seconds. That time only trailed fourth-ranked Nicole Miller of North Linn by 10 seconds and was 12 seconds better than third place.

The top area team finish came from Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR as Bethany Lippert and Jessica Lippert led the way in fourth and sixth, respectively. Bethany crossed the line in 15:54 and Jessica finished in 16:09 as the team scored 119 points, trailing only runner-up North Linn (96) and champion Grinnell (62). Hudson (152) and Starmont (168) rounded out the top five, while South Tama was eighth, BCLUW ninth, North Tama 10th and Grundy Center 11th. West Marshall also competed and placed 17th overall.

South Tama County's Taylor Ellenbecker was next best individual finisher in the area as she was 10th overall in 16:27.

Becca Steckelberg led BCLUW with a 12th place finish in 16:34, while Amelia Tonner was 15th in 16:44.

Sammy Watson of North Tama was runner-up to Abi Watson among Redhawks as she hit the line in 38th overall with a time of 17:34.

Grundy Center's 11th place finish was led by Tiana Saak's 26th place finish and Hannah Stumberg's 29th place tally. They were separated by 9 seconds with Saak leading the way at 17:07.

West Marshall's top runner was sophomore Maggie Sodders, who crossed the line 65th overall with a time of 18:47.

Bradley's third-place tally leads boys

DIKE - The first Grinnell runner did not cross the line until five other times were stopped but the Tigers still took the team title after scoring four top-20 finishes at the Wolverine Invitational on Tuesday night.

Mason Doty and Isaac McFee were sixth and eighth, respectively, and the Tigers scored 66 points to secure another team championship. Denver's Kyle Kehoe was the individual champion at 16 minutes, 11 seconds and that helped the Cyclones (85) to a runner-up finish, while Waterloo Columbus Catholic was third with 119 points.

The top area runner was West Marshall's Nathan Bradley, who came across in third with a time of 16:29. That was just six seconds behind Aplington-Parkersburg sophomore C.J. May, who was runner-up.

BCLUW's Cole Silver was the next area runner to hit the finish line as his 7th place finish was clocked at 16:56. The Comets also 16th place finish from Derek Coulter and took seventh in the team standings with 181 points. Ben Kuhl also placed 32nd overall.

South Tama County was eighth with 199 points and the Trojans were led by Robert Tyynismaa's 11th place tally. He hit the line in 17:11 while his closest teammate was Blake Keller in 19th.

West Marshall was ninth in the team standings with 225 points. Finishing after Bradley was freshman Austin Grimm in 24th place. He hit the line in 17:58.

Grundy Center was 12th in the team standings and the Spartans (315) were led by Espen Cleveland's 18:20. That was good enough for 36th place, while Finn Cleveland was 48th overall.
