JEWELL - Three top-10 finishes wasn't enough to get the Class 2A No. 6 East Marshall boys' cross country team a win Thursday at the Jim Klein Invitational.
The Mustangs, with 59 points, came in second to third-ranked Gilbert (47).
Nick Meling led the top-10 trio for East Marshall, placing sixth in a time of 17 minutes, 20 seconds. Caleb Benzing took seventh in 17:24, and Ben Terrones was eighth in 17:31. Sam Benzing was 18th (17:51) and Josh Benzing took 20th (17:53) to round out the Mustangs' scoring effort.
On the girls' side, 2A No. 5-ranked Gilbert was again the winner with just 23 points. Class 1A No. 10 South Hamilton, the event host, placed second with 81 points and East Marshall's girls were third with 102.
Haley Fye, listed 17th in the latest 2A rankings, placed fourth in the meet with a time of 16:28. Bobbi Amendt came in ninth (17:01), while Kristen Amendt placed 14th in 17:19. Carrington Curphy took 33rd (18:12) and Megan Pansegrau 42nd (19:02) for the Mustangs, who next run in the Union Invite on Tuesday at La Porte City.
