A driver using a cell phone crashed into a mailbox and two benches at 2:17 a.m. Sunday at 602 W. Main Street.

Chan Kep, 33, of Marshalltown, was driving east on West Main Street when he was allegedly distracted by his cell phone conversation and crossed the center line of the street then crashed onto the sidewalk.

Kep's car destroyed a mailbox with an estimated value of $300, city-owned wooden benches also valued at $300 and had an estimated $3,000 worth of damages to his 2014 Chevy Impala.

According to the Marshalltown Police Department, he left the scene and his car was found at his home on the 600 block of W. Church St.

His car was towed to be used as evidence. He was charged with striking fixtures, no driver's license, failing to maintain control and driving on the wrong side of a two way highway.

He makes his initial court appearance Oct. 21.
