West Marshall closes conference with sweep

LE GRAND - Claiming its sixth victory in its last seven matches, West Marshall swept past cross county rival East Marshall 25-18, 25-16, 25-18 in North Iowa Cedar League West Division play Tuesday.

Brandy Wilkey led the Trojans (15-19, 2-5) at the net with 12 kills and Morgan Hopper added seven, while Alarie Craven and Jennifer Davis each tallied four. Craven distributed a team-high 25 assists and shared the second-highest digs total with Blair Bailey as each came up with seven.

Claire Underwood paced the defense with 15 digs and converted all 18 of her serves along with four aces. Mackenzie Coberly tacked on three service winners in the Trojans' regular season finale.

Sophia Grego led the Mustangs (5-18, 0-7) with four kills, while Kelsea Anderson and Brooke Miller each had three. Claire Johnson tallied two kills and three blocks, while Meriel Leavy and Ashley Allen each rejected a pair at the net. Allen contributed a team-best 18 assists, Haley Long had nine assists and Madisen Hinegardner chipped in eight.

Long connected on all seven of her service attempts and Sam Earley went 8-for-8 from the line with each adding an ace for East Marshall. Grego was 9-for-11 with two service winners and Johnson served up three aces.

The Mustangs close the regular season at GMG Thursday, before traveling to Nevada Oct. 28. West Marshall will square off with either CMB or Colfax-Mingo on Oct. 29 in State Center.

BCLUW 3, AGWSR 1

ACKLEY - The Comets wrapped up their regular season with a six-match win streak after toppling AGWSR 25-17, 25-21, 17-25, 26-24 in a NICL West Division season finale showdown Tuesday.

Olivia Callaway bolstered BCLUW's attack with 14 kills, two solo blocks and five block assists as the Comets (15-14, 4-3) followed up a perfect run at their home tournament with another victory before the postseason.

Nicole Montgomery added nine kills and 10 digs, Bobbi Paper distributed 11 assists and Nicolette Simpson dished out nine. Kendall Scurr led the squad with 13 digs and Mallory Vawter had 11, while converting 17-of-18 from the service line along with an ace. Scurr (16-16, 1 ace), Simpson (14-15), Paper (15-15, 2 aces), Callaway (12-13) and Montgomery (13-14, 3 aces) also had strong nights on serve. The Comets connected on 87-of-91 from behind the service line (.956) with a total of seven aces.

Madison Fryslie and Taylor Steinfeldt led the Cougars (7-23, 3-4) with 14 kills apiece, while Danielle Henning and Alexa Johnson each added eight. Kim Ellingson doled out 26 assists and Henning had 23. Olivia Ingledue came up with 23 digs and Fryslie had 17. Henning served 18-of-22 with three aces and Steinfeldt was 8-for-8 with a pair. Ellingson was 15-of-15 on serve, while Fryslie (14-15) and Alana Groninga (7-7) each had a service winner.

BCLUW faces off against South Hardin Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in Eldora. The winner battles Grundy Center on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. on the Spartans' home floor.

AGWSR will host the winner of Northeast Hamilton and Southeast Webster-Grand on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in Ackley.
