"Memphis the Musical" is coming to Stephens Auditorium in Ames. The hit Brodaway musical will hit the stage at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24.
From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, comes a hot Broadway musical that bursts off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. Inspired by actual events, "Memphis" is about a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break. The audience joins in on their incredible journey to the ends of the airwaves - filled with laughter, soaring emotion and roof-raising rock 'n' roll.
Winner of four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, "Memphis" features a Tony-winning book by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) and a Tony-winning original score with music by Bon Jovi's founding member, David Bryan. "Memphis" is directed by Tony nominee Christopher Ashley (Xanadu), and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys). Scenic design for "Memphis" is by Tony winner David Gallo (The Drowsy Chaperone, Reasons to Be Pretty), costume design is by Tony nominee Paul Tazewell (In The Heights), lighting design is by Tony winner Howell Binkley (Jersey Boys) and sound design is by Ken Travis (The Threepenny Opera).
"Memphis" also won four 2010 Drama Desk Awards (including Best Musical) and four 2010 Outer Critics Circle Awards (including Outstanding Musical).
In addition to a three-year run on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre, "Memphis" launched a successful 55-city national tour in 2011. Also in 2011, NCM and Broadway Worldwide filmed the live stage version of "Memphis" for theatrical release, making it the first Broadway show to release a film version while still running on Broadway.

Join John Pemble at 7 p.m. in the Celebrity Caf on the ground floor, north entrance to Stephens for a short presentation of insights about this musical. Pemble is the arts and culture reporter at Iowa Public Radio and a former adjunct professor for Iowa Central Community College's broadcasting department. The preview is free and open to all ticket holders.

Hickory Park will cater a BBQ in our Celebrity Caf between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The menu includes beef, pork or turkey smoked sandwiches or vegetarian black bean burgers served with three sides and a drink for $15. Dinner tickets must be purchased by Oct. 18.
