An inmate who escaped in August from a work-release facility in Marshalltown is back in custody.

Casey Sheriff, 40, was arrested on a warrant in Polk County Thursday and made an initial court appearance Friday.

Sheriff failed to return to the facility after he left with permission to go to work back in August. He'd been living at the facility for about a week.

Sheriff was serving a five year sentence for domestic assault. According to court records, he violated a no-contact order by entering his ex-girlfriend's apartment where he attempted to choke her, and then punched her in the mouth. This was his third conviction for domestic assault.

He is being held at the Marshall County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 28.
