Community embraces Scouting for Food project

October 23, 2013
Greg DeSaulniers, Marshalltown , Times-Republican

There is a saying, "it is better to give, than to receive." On Saturday, Oct.12, residents of Marshalltown and some surrounding communities brought that saying to life by donating food to the 23rd annual Scouting for Food community service project. More than 6,000 items of food were collected to help those in need.

I want to express my sincere thanks to the residents who were able to contribute donated food items to this worthwhile cause. I know for some it is hard to give to others when there is a need at home. But the community responded again as it has done for the last 22 years.

Thank you to the local radio stations, KDAO, KFJB/KXIA and Catholic radio station KCRM for their support in broadcasting important information regarding our efforts to help our community. Also I want to extend a big thank you to the Marshalltown Times-Republican and the Pennysaver newspapers for their continued support to help make this project a success.

Finally, thank you to all the volunteers of the Emergency Food Box, the adult leaders and parents of the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and the Scouts themselves for taking a day out of their busy schedules to help with the sorting and collecting of all the food and filling in "at the last minute" to help me with some logistical details. Without your help, this project would not be possible. Thank you all.
