Thomas A. Eckerman, 67

Thomas Arthur Eckerman, 67, of Abilene, Texas, formerly of Marshalltown, passed away unexpectedly on the afternoon of Sept. 30, 2013, at his home in Abilene, Texas. Tom was born Dec. 20, 1945 in Burlington, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Eckerman, and his sister, Sue Ellen. He is survived by his mother, Ellen (Bette) Eckerman, residing at Bishop Drum Retirement Center, 5837 Winwood Drive, in Johnston, Iowa.

Tom graduated from St. Mary's High School in Marshalltown, Iowa and enlisted in the US Air Force, which would prove to be the love of his life. After a stellar 20 year career, he retired from the Air Force and continued his love of airplanes and flying with a civilian avionics career at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, from which he retired after another 20 years.

The family greatly appreciates all the coworkers and friends Tom had in Abilene. They were a great source of community and friendship. We know from the many expressions of sympathy how much he will be missed.

A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, October 26, at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Chapel at Bishop Drum Retirement Center in Johnston, Iowa. Inurnment will be in the family plot at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa at a later date.
