Richard H. "Dick" Svendsen, 79, of Conrad, IA passed away Monday, November 18, 2013, at Oakview Nursing Home, in Conrad. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 23, 2013, at Gladbrook Chapel United Methodist Church, in rural Gladbrook. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 22, 2013, at the Conrad Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes. Interment will be at Chapel Cemetery, in rural Gladbrook. Dick was born February 17, 1934 to Harry and Rose (Ingledue) Svendsen in Marshalltown. He was educated in the Green Mountain schools graduating from Green Mountain High School in 1953. Dick was united in marriage to Joan Crawford on March 2, 1958 in Melbourne, IA. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Along with his wife he farmed the rural Green Mountain and Beaman area for 44 years retiring in 2001 when they moved to Conrad. He also sold seed for Mycogen. Dick was a member of the Gladbrook Chapel United Methodist Church where he was a trustee. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Beaman Lions Club, the Beaman American Legion, Beaman Coop Board, and the Heart of Iowa Board. He also served as Grundy County Trustee.

Dick will be missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Joan, his three children; Randy (Donna) Svendsen of Marshalltown, Debra (Alan) Benoit of Menomonie, WI, Steven (Judith) Svendsen of Clive, IA, ten grandchildren; Rebekah, Luke, Jacob, Lydia, and Leah Svendsen, Erin and Jena Benoit, Abigail, Nicole, and Rachel Svendsen, and a sister, Helen Knoll of Marshalltown. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Doris Svendsen and a brother, James Svendsen.
