Man arrested for starting bar fight

A local man who allegedly started a bar fight and caused a man to go to the hospital was arrested.

Curtis E. Carson, 22, was arrested after the incident took place inside The Oasis,209 E. Main St., around 2 a.m.

According to police, Carson and another man were making comments back and forth that led to Carson hitting him on the head. The victim went to the hospital and had several stitches.

Carson was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, a simple misdemeanor. The incident is still under investigation and Carson could face additional charges.

In addition to this fight, police say two or three other fights were going on at the same time inside Oasis. When officers arrived the people involved in those fights took off running. After police look at the bar's surveillance videos, more arrests could be made.

Jonathan Hipolito, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a operating while intoxicated-first offense charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Dec. 13. Hipolito was released on his own recognizance with the condition that he obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days of today's date.

Christopher Allen Verbeek, 417 N. Fourth Ave., made an initial appearance on a simple assault charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days of today's date.

Harlan Rankin, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a providing alcohol to a person under legal age charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $500 with a $175 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $735, due within 30 days of today's date.

Hector Lizarde Garcia, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due within 30 days of today's date.

Lucio Gutierrez, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due within 30 days of today's date.

Gilbert Gonzalez, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a operation without registration charge and a defective muffler charge. He pleaded guilty to operation without registration and was fined $50 with a $17.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $127.50, due within 30 days of today's date. On the defective muffler charge he pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial conference is set for 9 a.m. on Dec. 31 in Magistrate Court.

Jason Lynn Johnson, of State Center, made an initial appearance on a prohibited acts charge and a possession of prescription drugs-third or subsequent offense charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Dec. 16. Johnson was released with supervision through the Department of Correctional Services and is to report to them within 24 hours.

Christine M. Grice, 110 Pleasantview Road, made an initial appearance through counsel, Kevin O'Hare, on a fraudulent practices-second degree charge and a tampering with court records charge. The preliminary hearing was waived.

Jacob R. Clair, of Colo, made an initial appearance on a ongoing criminal conduct charge and four counts of a burglary-second degree charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Dec. 3. Bond is set at $25,000 cash or surety. Clair is to report to the Department of Correctional Services upon release.

Zachary Ray Matteson, 2354 Sand Road, made an initial appearance on a possession of a controlled substance charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Dec. 13. Matteson was released on his own recognizance.

Incidents

On Sunday Roberto Mora, 801 E. South St., reported damage to a wooden door and frame at his residence and the theft of an automotive torch with two tank attachments. Estimated value of loss was $400.

On Saturday Perry Michael Bowers, 317 S. 18th Ave., reported hit and run damage to the driver side door on a 2001 Dodge Caravan while parked at 209 E. Main St. Estimated value of damage was $1,000.

On Friday Kerry Knudsen, of Osage, reported the theft of a 2006 GMC Yukon Denali from 505 Thomas Drive. Estimated value of loss was $15,000.

On Friday Kevin McCartney, 105 S. Eighth St., reported damage to a central air conditioning unit at his residence and the theft of copper pipe. Estimated value of loss was $2,500.

Citations

On Sunday Miles Mancieri, of Newton, was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Sunday Julian Lasley Ilias, 1412 W. Church St., was arrested for operating while intoxicated-first offense.

On Saturday, Jorge Gonzalez, 2028 Edgebrook Drive, was arrested for public intoxication.

On Saturday, Margarito Martinez-Pena, 510 E. State St. Apt. #3, was arrested for driving while barred.

On Saturday, Curtis Edward Carson, 1106 W. Church St. (Half), was arrested for disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

On Saturday, Zachary Ray Matteson, 2121B 190th St., and 1221 Rolling Meadows Road, was arrested for narcotic violations and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Friday, Roxann Denise Romig, Homeless, was arrested for public intoxication.

On Friday, Lawrence Briggs, of Chicago, Ill., was arrested for theft-third degree.

On Friday, Benjamin Christian Hansen, 9 S. Eighth St., was arrested for public intoxication-third or subsequent conviction.

On Sept. 27, Matthew Scott Bodie, 809 N. Fourth St., was arrested for theft-fourth degree and unauthorized use of credit cards.

Accidents

On Saturday, a car driven by Jerri Ann Lavender, 710 1/2 E. State St., was westbound on West Church Street at the intersection with South Third Street when it changed from the north lane to the south lane and proceeded forward through the stop sign causing a collision with a minivan driven by Gerardo Leyva Leyva, 3202 S. 12th St. Lot #169, which was northbound on Third Street and had continued on after stopping at the stop sign. Leyva Leyva was transported to the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center Emergency Room. Lavender was cited for no insurance-accident and failure to obey a stop or yield sign. Damage to the Lavender car was estimated at $5,000 while the Leyva Leyva minivan received an estimated $3,000 in damage.

On Saturday, a car driven by Mary Lou Daniel, 604 W. Nevada St., was eastbound in the 200 block of Westwood Drive when it failed to move over and struck a legally parked car. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Daniel car was estimated at $1,500 while the legally parked car received an estimated $2,500 in damage.

On Friday, a car driven by Ardis M. O'Brien, 3202 S. 12th St. Lot #114, was westbound on Iowa Avenue when it went entered the intersection with South Sixth Street on a red light and collided broadside with a pickup driven by Rudy Albertis Frye, 1403 S. Fourth St., which was traveling south. O'Brien and Frye were possibly injured, but not transported. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $3,000 each.

On Friday, a minivan driven by Joseph Ross King, 105 W. Lincoln St., was northbound on North Third Avenue when it went out of control on the icy, snowy surface and crossed over into the southbound lanes hitting the west shoulder and sideswiping the passenger side of a vehicle driven by Eileen Audrey Sudenga, 510 Highland Drive, which was traveling south on Third Avenue. No injuries were reported. King was cited for no insurance-accident and driving while license is denied, cancelled, revoked or suspended. Damage to the King minivan was estimated at $700 while the Sudenga vehicle received an estimated $2,000 in damage.

On Wednesday, a car driven by Justin Paul Goodwin, 1910 Edgebrook Drive, was southbound on South Center Street approaching the intersection with Linn Street when it collided with the rear of a vehicle driven by Christine Marie Klosterman, 1407 S. Fourth St., which was also traveling south. No injuries were reported. Goodwin was cited for failure to stop within a assured, clear distance. Damage to the Goodwin car was estimated at $5,000 while the Klosterman vehicle received $1,500 in damage.
