Irene Varvel, 92, Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013. Born 1920 to Julia and Stanley Fockler, Irene grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. While attending Iowa State Teachers College, she met the love of her life, Vic Varvel. After graduation she taught English and speech in Marion, Iowa, while Vic trained to be a U.S. Army Air Corps pilot. After the war, they moved to Marshalltown where they lived for 17 years. Vic worked for Lennox Industries for 38 years, primarily as a Territory Sales manager.
Irene and Vic were married for 69 years and they raised 4 children. Irene loved literature, poetry, theater, art, and travel. She regularly volunteered in her church, and in schools and hospitals wherever she lived. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Lincoln and active in United Methodist Women. She was a devoted and dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband Vic Varvel. She is survived by daughter Victoria (Marty) Stokke, Oklahoma; daughter, Linda Varvel (Martha Hewett), Minnesota; son, Steven (Linda) Varvel, South Dakota; son, John (Elizabeth) Varvel, Lincoln; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial service: 3 pm, Thursday, December 5, Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 South 14th St., Lincoln. Memorials to St. Paul United Methodist Church in Lincoln.
