COLO - Two games into the season, Colo-NESCO point guard Shayla Dean has matched last winter's 3-point output.
The junior point guard put up a career-high 23 points, propelled by a career-best four 3-pointers, in leading Class 1A preseason No. 3 Colo-NESCO past North Tama, 68-32, in Tuesday's Iowa Star Conference girls' basketball opener.
Dean added 10 steals and six assists for the Royals (2-0, 1-0), who dominated from the opening whistle and led 19-1 after the opening period and 37-12 at the half.
Madison Farren and Caitlyn Riese both scored 11 points on the interior for Colo-NESCO. Hannah Buseman, Melanie Van Loon and Makaelyn Neuendorf chipped in six points apiece.
North Tama (0-2, 0-1) was led by Josie Youel's 12 points. Anna Kvidera had nine points and Sam Zobel added seven points, all of which came from the free-throw line.
The Redhawks host Don Bosco (1-1, 1-0) on Friday in conference play, while Colo-NESCO visits Waterloo Christian for a league contest.
South Hardin 73, Jesup 58
JESUP - Kayla Prosser poured in a career-best 28 points and 12 rebounds to keep South Hardin's pristine record intact in a 73-58 road win over Jesup.
The Tigers (3-0) carried a 50-46 edge into the final frame before breaking away with a 23-14 advantage in the last period. Claire Damon dropped in a trio of 3-pointers for 13 points. Prosser had nine offensive boards, while Sarah Boomgarden scored 10 points and swiped seven steals.
South Hardin overcame a two-point first quarter deficit to lead 35-32 at intermission. Damon added four assists and five steals as the Tigers tallied 20 takeaways collectively, while claiming 14 of its 29 rebounds on the offensive end.
The Tigers face Gladbrook-Reinbeck on the road Friday in NICL West Division action, before facing Wapsie Valley in Waverly Saturday.
West Marshall 61, Waterloo Columbus 53
WATERLOO - Gabby Reyerson scored eight of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to help the West Marshall girls' basketball team rally past Waterloo Columbus, 61-53.
Rachel Freland added 19 points and Madie Streeter had 10 as the Trojans (2-1) overcame a 48-46 deficit entering the fourth. The Sailors led 21-15 after the first frame and 31-30 at halftime, though Mackenzie Coberley's lone basket of the game was a big one. Her 3-pointer gave West Marshall its first lead with just under three minutes to play as the Trojans outscored the home team 15-5 in the final stanza.
Streeter grabbed six boards and had three steals, while Freland tallied four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Ann Stien led Waterloo Columbus (0-1) with 16 points, Brooke Craig had 12 and Lindsay McManus 11.
The Trojans travel to South Tama County Friday for their North Iowa Cedar League West Division opener.
Don Bosco 53, GMG 45
GARWIN - Emily and Abby Schaefer both scored in double figures to lead Don Bosco past GMG in their Iowa Star Conference clash Tuesday.
Emily Schaefer had 12 points and Abby 10 for the Dons (1-1, 1-0), while Kaitlyn McGarvey and Riley Schares added seven points apiece. Don Bosco led by 17 entering the fourth quarter but had to withstand GMG's 19-10 scoring advantage in the final frame.
Caitlin Appelgate led the Wolverines with 16 points and Olivia Barritt had 13. Mikaella Koster chipped in eight.
GMG (0-3, 0-1) hosts Meskwaki on Friday in league play.
