BOYS HOOPS: Royals hold off hard-charging North Tama

COLO - Battling through a sprained ankle, Colo-NESCO sophomore point guard Brady Stoeffler hit the game-winning jumper with three seconds left to help the Royals stave off North Tama in a 55-53 Iowa Star Conference South Division thriller Tuesday.

Stoeffler left the game in the third quarter before returning in the fourth to finish with 16 points and four assists, while Christian Reischauer had the same stat line.

The Royals (1-0, 1-0) built a 35-23 lead at halftime, though the Redhawks (1-1, 0-1) climbed back within seven entering the fourth and knotted the game in the final frame. Cole Ozbun added 13 points and five rebounds for the home team, while Tanner Clatt chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.

Paul Kaufmann led North Tama with 17 points and Logan Zobel added 15 with four 3-pointers before fouling out. Taylor Dinsdale contributed eight points and Ben Panfil had seven.

North Tama returns home to entertain Don Bosco Friday while the Royals start a three-game swing with trips to Waterloo Christian (Friday) and CMB (Saturday).

Don Bosco edges GMG

GARWIN - Travis Havel racked up 28 points and Don Bosco held off GMG, 54-48, in an Iowa Star Conference South Division opener Tuesday.

The Wolverines (0-1, 0-1) closed a five-point halftime deficit to one heading into the fourth, but were outscored 12-7 in the last frame.

Brock Fisher led GMG with 18 points and seven rebounds and Bridger Claassen scored 12 points and hauled in five boards. Austin Vaughn chipped in nine points while Chad Plaehn claimed six rebounds.

Connor Weber tallied 13 points for Don Bosco (1-0, 1-0).

The Wolverines host Meskwaki (2-0) Friday.
