MILWAUKEE - Matt Tiby and Jordan Aaron scored 19 points apiece to lead Milwaukee over the Northern Iowa men's basketball team 83-72 on Tuesday night.
Milwaukee (8-2) had four players in double figures, with Steve McWhorter adding 16 and Austin Arians chipping in with 11. Milwaukee shot 45 percent from the floor, including 10-of-27 (37 percent) from beyond the arc.
Tiby, a 6-foot-8 Urbandale native and sophomore transfer from Kirkwood Community College, shot 7-of-12 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers.
Northern Iowa (3-4) was led by Deon Mitchell with 19 points, while sophomore Wes Washpun added a career-high 16 and Chip Rank scored 13.
Northern Iowa built a seven-point halftime lead, and stretched it to nine a minute into the second half.
But Milwaukee scored the next 17 points, including 3-pointers by Tiby and Aaron, to reverse the tide and give Milwaukee a six-point lead at 13:40 of the second.
"When you have a double-figure lead you need to hang on to it," said UNI coach Ben Jacobson. "We got the double-digit lead but we didn't keep it very long. For 25 minutes we played pretty good basketball, but we didn't match Milwaukee's effort in the stretch in the second half."
Northern Iowa cut the lead to five on a pair of Washpun free throws with 1:32 left, but Milwaukee made four straight free throws to secure the victory.
The Panthers will face Iowa State in the 5 p.m. opening game of the Big Four Classic on Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
