WATERLOO - Shayla Dean continued her torrid start to the season, tallying 19 points, nine assists and seven steals in leading the Class 1A No. 3 Colo-NESCO girls' basketball team to a 63-31 rout of Waterloo Christian in Iowa Star Conference play Friday.
Dean is now averaging 18.3 points per game for the Royals (3-0, 2-0). She matched her career best with four 3-pointers in the league win.
Madison Farren contributed 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while Melanie Van Loon knocked down a pair of 3-pointers on her way to 10 points.
Caitlyn Riese added eight points and Leah Vincent had six off the bench for Colo-NESCO, which goes on the road today to face CMB at 3 p.m. in Maxwell.
Whitney Smith led Waterloo Christian (0-2, 0-2) with eight points. Anna Doering scored seven points, while Kaitlin Armbrecht and April Hall added six apiece for the Regents.
Grundy Center 52, AGWSR 49, OT
GRUNDY CENTER - Alyssa Mathews made a pair of key layups in overtime to help Grundy Center complete its comeback for a victory over AGWSR, 52-49, in Friday's NICL West Division opener.
Katie Lindeman finished with 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Spartans, but fouled out before the game could reach overtime. Mathews tallied 13 points with some critical free throws down the stretch at the end of regulation.
Madison Beenken and Jennifer Rust both chipped in with seven points. Jessica Ackerson had four points, seven rebounds and five assists for Grundy Center (2-0, 1-0), which trailed by double digits during the first half.
AGWSR's 24-18 halftime lead disappeared as the Spartans outscored them 15-7 in the third period to take a 33-31 lead. The Cougars were led by Madi Fryslie's 14 points and Kim Ellingson's 12. Alexa Johnson contributed eight points.
The Cougars (0-3, 0-1) take on Jesup in the NICL Holiday Classic today at Wartburg College in Waverly. Grundy Center is off until Tuesday's conference contest at BCLUW.
South Tama 53, West Marshall 47
TAMA - South Tama used a 21-14 fourth-quarter advantage to overtake West Marshall, winning Friday's NICL West opener 53-47.
Madie Bacon and Regina Balderas scored 12 points for STC (1-1, 1-0), while Kallie Hala had 10. Trisha Walz chipped in seven points and Tieranny Keahna added six.
West Marshall (2-2, 0-1), which led 33-32 entering the final frame, was led by Rachel Freland's 21 points. Gabby Reyerson had 14 points and nine rebounds, while Madie Streeter chipped in eight points and a team-leading 10 rebounds.
West Marshall goes to North Polk today, while South Tama takes on Class 2A No. 5 Hudson in the NICL Holiday Classic at Warburg College in Waverly.
North Tama 40, Don Bosco 38
TRAER - Sam Zobel scored a game-high 13 points as North Tama picked up its first win of the season, beating back Don Bosco 40-38 Friday in Iowa Star Conference action.
Anna Kvidera added nine points and Josie Youel had eight points and six rebounds for the Redhawks (1-2, 1-1).
Abby Schaefer led Don Bosco (1-2, 1-1) with 11 points. Emily Schaefer and Lauren Becker added eight points apiece.
North Tama joins in on the NICL Holiday Classic today, taking on the Denver Cyclones at Wartburg College in Waverly.
