Customers who stop at 130 W. Main St. in State Center will see many smiles and hear a lot of laughter from the proprietors, but make no mistake, the owners mean business.

Entrepreneurs Angie Billings of A Salon, Suzie Buerckley of Sassy's and Sheila Stalzer of Skin Care & Mystic Tanning have joined forces to offer one-stop shopping on the Rose Capitol of Iowa's Main Street.

Cooperative space sharing is not a new concept, but the three veteran businesswomen believe they are offering the right mix to attract not only State Center customers, but those from central Iowa too.

Pictured are three State Center entrepreneurs who have recently opened one-stop shopping for women’s fashions, salon services and tanning at 130 W. Main Street. From left are Angie Billings, Sheila Stalzer and Suzie Buerckley.
Billings is owner of A Salon, Stalzer has Skin Care and Mystic Tanning and Buerckley has Sassy’s Women’s Clothing.

Buerckley's clothing has approximately one-half of the floor space, while Billings and Stalzer share the other half.

But before the first customer entered, the three had put in hundreds of hours of sweat equity preparing the street level shops.

The building was thoroughly cleaned, the wood floor was refinished, and walls were painted, among other tasks

Then, and only then, could the three set up their individual shops.

Buerckley owns the building, with Billings and Stalzer as renters.

The historic property, complete with a tin ceiling, was constructed in 1910, and its exterior and interior architecture fits in well with many other properties on Main Street.

Billings moved from another location to join forces with her two partners.

She has 20 years experience as a hair stylist, and emphasized her hair coloring skills, and received strong endorsements from Buerckley and Stalzer.

Billings also prides herself on being able to cut men's hair too.

"I've been cutting men's hair since cosmetology school," she said. "I can do everything, color, cuts and the latest styles for men and women. I've done it all and fixed it all."

Buerckley believed there was a market to offer reasonably-price women's clothing in State Center and jumped at the opportunity.

And she is not new to retail, she comes from a long line of veteran retailers in Indianola.

She had another reason to open.

"State Center is very strong in offering personal services," she said. "But I saw a need for retail and especially women's clothing, so here I am."

Sassy's offers junior to plus sizes clothing, jeans with bling, jewelry and fashion scarves among other items.

"I'll be getting in prom dresses in the next couple of weeks," she said.

Stalzer said tanning aficionados will be impressed with the newest technology in spray tanning.

And of course, there is complete privacy.

Additionally, Stalzer carries the Sunless Pro Collection.

She emphasized her talent in extensive experience doing chemical peels and facials.

The three stressed they are not restricted by posted business hours and are available by appointment.
