Marshalltown is one of 37 communities in the United States to receive a 2013 Community Pacesetter award by the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (GLR).

The national honor recognizes Marshalltown for its Spread the Words-Read by 3rd initiative. The reading campaign is one of 140 communities working with the GLR campaign.

"In this past year we participated in several of the campaigns for grade level reading events," said Lindsey Upah, Spread the Words-Read by 3rd coordinator. "We did summer learning day, we started September Awareness Month and we participated in a couple other events that really kind of showcased what Marshalltown is doing and let people know the good things that we have done within our city. That is what brought us to the forefront."

The GLR campaign will make the national announcement Wednesday.

"It's an honor," Upah said. "It shows we are doing good things and the city of Marshalltown cares about our youngest population and wants positive outcomes for them."
