Born Herbert W. Johnson on April 4, 1931, at home on the family farm near LaMoille, he was one of four sons born to Fred and Viola (Strawbridge) Johnson. He was a 1949 graduate of the LaMoille High School. While roller skating in Marshalltown, he met the lovely young Lola Bryngelson and the two were united in marriage on July 26, 1950, at her parents' home.
Herb farmed alongside his dad and brother, Chuck, all of his life at LaMoille. He was a member of the LaMoille Congregational Church, the Albion Damascus Masonic Lodge, Central Chapter OES, Mid-Iowa Antique Power Association, the NRA, the Moose Lodge and the Isaak Walton League.
Many will remember Herb for his out-going personality and his forthright demeanor. He enjoyed people, going dancing with Lola, country music events and jams and treasured his family especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In death, he rejoined his parents and his youngest daughter, Lori, who died on June 26, 2011.
