CONRAD - Through the years, BCLUW High School wrestlers have had practices in auditoriums, cafeterias and at other school districts.
Coach Stacy Simpson feels it's time the team had its own practice room and he is leading a fundraising effort.
The BCLUW School Board has already made a $300,000 commitment to the project with an additional $125,000 needed through fundraising.
Simpson said they have already had $88,000 pledged for the project.
"Things are going fairly well," Simpson said.
He said the proposed building is 60 feet by 100 feet with its features contingent on how much they raise. The location would be east of the Jill Fiscus Training Center at the BCLUW High School campus in Conrad, but it is unclear whether it would be attached to the building or be a standalone structure.
BCLUW shared a wrestling program with Grundy Center from 1989 to 2010 and has been sharing a program with South Hardin since 2010.
Currently, BCLUW students are bused 26 miles to Eldora for practice.
"It's a lot of time on the road for our kids," Simpson said.
Simpson said they have traditionally had strong community support for the wrestling program at BCLUW. His wrestlers are looking forward to a place to call their own.
"Anytime we are looking at a new facility the kids are excited about it," Simpson said.
Simpson said the ideal situation would be to have construction start in the fall with its completion sometime next winter. He said due to the numbers of students involved in the program they would still share the program with South Hardin, even with their own wrestling practice facility.
Donations can be sent payable to BCLUW CSD Foundation at P.O. Box 10, Conrad, IA 50621.
