Sarah Pratt, butter sculptor at the Tama County Family STEM Festival March 30 at North Tama County Schools.
Pratt will present "A Brief History of the Butter Cow," describe the sculpting process from sketching to building the armature (or framework) to sculpting the butter and then the children will have an opportunity to sketch and build their own wire armature. Pratt, of West Des Moines, has been sculpting butter for more than 20 years. She started out just cleaning buckets for Norma "Duffy" Lyon, the famed butter sculptor. Under Duffy's tutelage, Pratt became a sculptor in her own right, and when Duffy retired in 2006 she named Pratt her successor.

Since then not only has Pratt sculpted the Butter Cow, but also Superman, Harry Potter, Shawn Johnson, Norman Borlaug, Neil Armstrong, a Nativity scene, Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham and Snow White.
Pratt lives in West Des Moines with her husband Andy and three children Hannah, Grace and Dean.
The entire Tama County Family STEM Festival will take place from 1 to 4 p.m.
