Community Foundation of Marshall County announces more than $105,000 in grants awarded to county nonprofit projects.
On March 25, the recipients of grants from the Community Foundation of Marshall County will be announced at a ceremony to be held at Iowa Valley Continuing Education in Dejardin Hall. The event starts at 5 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres. Grant recipients will receive a check for their project during the evening. Thirty projects will receive more than $105,000 to help complete the activities they proposed.
The Board of the Community Foundation of Marshall County placed a special focus on Education and Literacy again this year.
"We feel strongly that we need to support issues that have been identified as needs by the community. If we can provide synergy for community wide programs we believe that helps us carry out our mission of improving quality of life in the county," said Heidi Pierson, co-chair of the board. "It made sense to us to support the efforts of the All-America City award Marshalltown received as part of the Campaign for 3rd Grade Reading so we focused on education."
While all the education projects selected for funding address literacy in some way they vary from a Summer Program for At-Risk kids at the Salvation Army to providing reading mentors through Big Brothers Big Sisters. One of the programs that will be featured at the event is the Second Chance Reading program at East Marshall Middle School.
Twelve of the recipients have projects that address literacy in some way. Almost one third of the total funds were awarded in this category. Other categories that received funds are Arts and Culture, Community Development and Health and Human Services. Projects will benefit the county in many different ways, from a playground in Clemons, and little league improvements in State Center and Green Mountain to hands on gardening experience through Marshall County 4H and Youth Development. Arts projects in Marshalltown will receive funding as will kitchen installation and an emergency generator for the fire station in Haverhill.
