Donald H. Searle, 88, of Marion, longtime Marshalltown resident, died early Sunday morning, March 23, 2014, at the Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, at the 1st Baptist Church in Marshalltown. He will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery with full military honors by the combined posts of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Harry C. Harter Post #839 and American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Born on July 3, 1925, in Marshalltown, he was the only child born to Howard A. and Olive Grace (Rubenbauer) Searle. He graduated from the Marshalltown High School's Class of 1942 and soon served our country honorably in the United States Army Air Corps in WWII. Don was trained as a pilot.
On January 18, 1948, Donald was united in marriage to C. Jean Swift in Gilman. They farmed near Marshalltown. Don served on the Board of Directors for the REC, MMSC (formerly MACH), the LeGrand and LDF School Boards, Fidelity Brenton Bank and the Marshalltown Senior Citizens.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Lee (Cheryl) Searle of Marshalltown, Joan (Larry) Nesset of Marion, and Lisa Searle of Marshalltown; grandchildren: Lindsay (Ryan) Dea and Matt (Amy) Searle; and great-grandchildren: Gage and Blake Searle, and Emma and Andrew Dea.
In death, Don rejoined his beloved Jean who died on July 3, 2011, and his parents, Howard and Olive.
