Josephine J. Wertman

Josephine Janet Wertman of Carlisle, Iowa passed away on March 10, 2014 at Urbandale Health Care Center in Urbandale, Iowa. Josephine was born July 29, 1918 in Marshalltown, Iowa to Joseph Whitacre and Caro Neil. Josephine grew up and graduated from Marshalltown High School and later from Iowa State University in Ames. Josephine met and later married Frederick Wertman Jr. on September 29, 1940 in Marshalltown. Josephine and Fred lived and raised their 3 children in Carlisle, Iowa. Josephine worked as a secretary for the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. Josephine was a member of the United Methodist Church in Carlisle where she was an organist. She was also a volunteer at the Iowa Methodist Hospital and Blank Children's Hospital, a member of P.E.O. chapter GA, and Order of Eastern Star. Josephine had received many awards in her life including the Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Volunteer Services-Raymond Blank Children's Hospital Guild, Governor's Award for Volunteer Services, Recognition Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Volunteer Services Benefitting the Community-United Way of Central Iowa Volunteer Center, Iowa Veterinary Medical Association President's Award, Honorary Membership to the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, and Honorary Membership to the American Association of Swine Practitioners. Josephine was preceded in death by her father in 1951, her mother in 1962, her husband Fred in 2008 and siblings; John Whitacre, Edward Whitacre, Doris Whitacre, Caro Whitacre and Mary Whitacre. Josephine leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children; Frederick David Wertman III, Janet Niday and Carol Smith, grandchildren; Douglas Wertman, Amy Sprecher, Bryan Niday, Kimberly Slifka, Michael and Karen Smith, great grandchildren; Megan and Jordan Wertman, Ryan and Chris Sprecher, R.B., Taylor and Allie Slifka, Matt and Emily Smith, great great grandchildren; Karson Hochmuth and Rosie Miller. Memorial services for Josephine will be held at 11:00 am, March 29, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Des Moines, Iowa. A visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 am prior to services also at the church. Burial of Fred and Josephine's ashes will be in the Avon Cemetery.
