What do seven handmade quilts, four tickets to "Live on Stage" (formerly Marshalltown Community Concert series), four tickets to the Newton Speedway and a Brighton purse have in common? They are all donated items on the silent and live auctions to be held at this year's Night of Stars on April 12 at the Elmwood Country Club.
Everyone is invited to participate in this 22nd annual evening of food, fellowship and entertainment to raise funds for the American Cancer Society and Iowa River Hospice.
"Originally known as 'Oscar Party,'" said Rhonda Miller, Iowa River Hospice Community Liaison, "this evening is a total volunteer effort. We have wonderful volunteers in our community who support Iowa River Hospice, and we truly appreciate them."
Handmade quilts and other items have been donated for the Night of Stars fundraiser. The annual event is schedules from April 12 at the Elmwood Country Club. Money raised during the evening will benefit the American Cancer Society and Iowa River Hospice.
This gala event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour followed by dinner which includes pork loin donated by JBS (but Elmwood can accommodate dietary needs, such as vegan or gluten-free). The silent auction will be held during the social and dinner hours from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
After dinner Donna Fiscus, mother of Jill Fiscus, will share her thoughts on her 16-year-old daughter's journey with cancer, her daughter's courage and what Jill taught her mother.
Night of the Stars participants will then have an opportunity to voice aloud their bids for auction items.
"Handmade quilts all made by volunteers are an important aspect of making our Iowa River Hospice Home a home away from home. And once again our volunteers have come through, providing quilts for the auctions of this year's Night of Stars, themed 'Quilts for Comfort ... Piecing it Together,'" Miller said.
The live and silent auctions have many goods and services generously provided by individuals and businesses in the area in addition to the beautiful quilts.
Dancing will bring the evening to a close, with Sound Pros of Iowa providing the dance music.
