WEST DES MOINES - Marshalltown golf coach Lucas Johnson feels like junior Ashley Harris is just starting to scratch the surface so far this season.
Harris fired another round in the 70s with a 77 on Monday and that helped the Bobcat girls' golf team to a sixth place finish at the West Des Moines Valley Invitational. The Bobcats fired a 360 as a team at Willow Creek Golf Course and finished 42 strokes behind team champion and host Valley.
"Back-to-back rounds in the 70s is a great indicator of where Ashley's game is headed," said Johnson.
Valley's 318 was one better than Waukee's 319 and 15 lower than third-place Atlantic (333). Johnston ended up fourth at 339 and Newton (355) was five strokes better than Marshalltown in fifth place.
Niccole Wolken carded an 89 for MHS, while Shelby Brennecke fired a personal-best 95. The final counting score was Madison Sogge's 99, while Natalie Kueny fired a 106 and Kierra Carbajal had a 121.
"I was happy to see Shelby bounce back after a tough day at home last Thursday," said Johnson. "She rebounded nicely with her best round as a Bobcat."
The rest of the field included Valley's second unit (364) in seventh, Mason City was (368) eighth, Des Moines Roosevelt/Hoover finished in ninth with a 368 and Southeast Polk was 10th with a 372. Ames was 11th with a 380, Ankeny carded a 381 and Urbandale (407) and Indianola (437) were 13th and 14th, respectively.
The Bobcats play at Central Iowa Conference North Division rival Fort Dodge today. Action begins at 3:30 p.m.
