The public is invited to attend the 86th annual commencement ceremony at Marshalltown Community College at 7 p.m. May 9 in the MCC Student Activity Center located on the south side of campus, 3700 S. Center St.
The MCC Class of 2014 includes 390 graduate applicants; 95 who completed their coursework in the fall of 2013, and 295 who intend to complete in the spring/summer. (note: numbers as of May 1.)
The commencement program includes the presentation of Colors by the Central Iowa Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, with the National Anthem performed by the group mTunes consisting of Larry Pfantz, Stacy Heil, Scott Kratzer and Andy Schwandt. MCC Provost, Dr. Robin Shaffer Lilienthal will welcome guests and Student Senate President Autumn Rathjen will introduce the commencement speaker, Carlos Portes, Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipient.
Chris Russell, Dean of Students and Academic Affairs, and MaryAnne Nickle, Dean of Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell will present Student Awards and Academic Honors. Rachael Koehler, YFU Coordinator, will recognize MCC's Youth for Understanding Students. Honorary MCC Degrees will be presented by Matt Bandstra, MCC Faculty Senate President.
A reception honoring the graduates will be held outside of the Student Activity Center immediately following the commencement ceremony. The Ray Frederick Gallery, Room 306, will be open for viewing former MCC student Zhenya Voevodina's photography exhibit.
The public is also reminded of the MCC Construction Technology Open House noon to 5:30 p.m. May 9 at the Gary and Sheri Edwards residence at 605 Grandview Drive, in Marshalltown.
