The Morning Optimist Club of Marshalltown held its weekly meeting Tuesday at the Hy-Vee Dining Room. President John Hall opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, and led an invocation.
Diane Hall passed a sign-up sheet for members to volunteer their time to help with the Marshalltown Parks and Recreation Department Kids to Parks Day on May 17. Hall will be organizing activities for children in her role as naturalist for the Marshall County Conservation Center. She would like assistance with those activities.
Dorothy McHone requested volunteers to help with the scoring of applications for the Tom Stanley Memorial Scholarships to be presented on May 20.
Cindy Egleston, right, daughter of Ron Galloway, presents the Ron Galloway Respect for Law Award plaque to Karen Wacome, left, who recently retired as a civil deputy with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department after 34 years of service.
Wendi Stanley, May program chair, introduced Cindy Egleston, daughter of Ron Galloway, for whom the club's annual Ron Galloway Respect for Law Award was named. Egleston thanked the Morning Optimist Club for keeping her father's memory alive since his death in 1990. Galloway was a captain with the Marshalltown Police Department until his death. Egleston emphasized how important law enforcement was to her father.
Egleston introduced Karen Wacome as the recipient for the 2014 award. Wacome recently retired as the Civil Deputy Sheriff for the Marshall County Sheriff's Department, a position she held for 34 years. Wacome spoke about how much she enjoyed her work with the department, giving examples of some of the many challenges of the job, as she served condemnations, served divorce papers, transported prisoners and more. Sheriff Ted Kamatchus spoke about Wacome's invaluable service to the department and how much she will be missed.
Hall closed the meeting with the group recitation of the Optimist Creed. The Morning Optimist Club of Marshalltown meets at 6:30 a.m. Tuesdays at the Hy-Vee Dining Room. Guests are welcome. The club's website is at www.morningoptimists.org.
