Volunteers were recently celebrated at the Iowa Veterans Home 40th annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon and Awards Program in the Malloy Leisure Resource Center. The theme for the luncheon was "IVH Volunteers Rock."
The event began with a welcome from Volunteer Services Coordinator, Aimee Deimerly-Snyder.
"Thank you to all of you, the volunteers, who work so hard to make life better for our residents! We truly appreciate your help and the time you give to us. You choose to spend your time here and for that we are blessed," Deimerly-Snyder said.

Deimerly-Snyder was followed by greeting from the city of by Pro Tem, Bethany Wirin. the welcome the invocation was given by IVH Chaplain Craig Nelson, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Brad Shipley, Activities Center Supervisor.
Singer, Erin Scott, provided music from the 50s, 60s and 70s for the volunteers following lunch. Scott specializes in Patsy Cline music.
IVH Social Workers, Recreation Therapists and Support Services staff volunteered to help with the event by decorating the room, manning the registration table, taking pictures and helping the Food Service staff serve the food and clear the dishes.
Commandant, Jodi Tymeson, welcomed the volunteers and invited guests to the awards ceremony. Wof thanks to the volunteers from IVH Resident Council President, Mike Croskey were also read.
Certificates of Service were presented to 14 veteran organizations whose members are actively involved with volunteering at IVH or who are represented on the IVH Volunteer Advisory Committee. Certificates were also issued to 26 additional groups and churches in honor of their members who volunteered at IVH in 2013-14.
The commandant selected Tom Renze, of Marshalltown, as the recipient of the 2014 Commandant's Award which is IVH's highest honor. Renze serves primarily the Catholic population at IVH with humility and compassion officiating the Wednesday Word and Communion Service each week, serving communion to those Catholics who are unable to attend Mass.
Renze assists at Mass every Thursday and organizes the Catholic volunteers coordinating them for distributing communion. He has assisted with funerals, as requested and assists in coordinating other Sacraments as needed or requested.
Renze has gotten to know most of the Catholics at IVH on a personal level. He visits and prays with those who are in need or dying. He offers supportive pastoral care to and meaningful relationship to the residents of IVH. He is a resource for the IVH Chaplains to call on when a Catholic clergy person is requested.
