CEDAR FALLS - The UNI School of Music and the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center will host the Midwest International Piano Competition on Sunday through June 7.
The event is open to the public, youth and professional performing pianists and piano enthusiasts.
The competition will feature 26 exceptional pianists from around the world, including Japan, China, Ukraine, Israel, Russia, South Korea, South Africa, the U.S. and more. The first place pianist in the senior category will claim a $10,000 cash prize as well as a recording contract with the Blue Griffin record label, an artist management deal with Heartland Concert Artists and a performance opportunity with the Waterloo Cedar Falls Symphony in an upcoming season. Awards will be given to the top three finalists in both junior (up to 17 years) and senior (up to 32 years) categories. Six semi-finalists in the senior category will also receive honorable mention awards.
All preliminary rounds from Sunday through June 5 are free and open to the public.
The final concert for the junior category will begin at 2 p.m. June 6, with tickets priced at $10. The final concert and receptions for the senior category will begin at 5 p.m. June 7, with tickets priced at $25.
The senior category finals concert will be an evening filled with music and a reception that will include appetizers, hors d'oeuvres, desserts, champagne and more.
