The Iowa Veterans Home (IVH) will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Allied landings at Normandy with a D-Day Program at 10 a.m. June 6 in the Malloy LRC.
Commandant Jodi S. Tymeson will serve as the Master of Ceremonies. The Marshalltown High School National Anthem Singers and Iowa Bagpiper, Ron Husted, will provide special music. IVH Chaplain Angela Doty will give the invocation and benediction. Soldiers from the Iowa National Guard will participate in the program as Color Guard. First Sergeant Donald E. Samuelson, Retired Iowa National Guard will perform TAPS.
Brig. Gen. Benjamin J. Corell was born in Manchester and raised in Strawberry Point. Corell graduated from Starmont High School in 1979 and enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard in January 1986. He received his officer's commission through the Iowa Military Academy's Officer Candidate School at Camp Dodge March 9, 1989.

He has commanded at the company, battalion and brigade level. He most recently commanded the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, Iowa Army National Guard, from June 2010 to June 2012 during which time he deployed these units to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). He was assigned as the Deputy Commanding General-Support for the 34th "Red Bull" Infantry Division on Sept. 7, 2012.
Corell and his wife Beth, have three grown sons, Wade, Travis and Tyler. All three sons are Non-Commissioned Officers serving in the Iowa National Guard. The Corells reside on Camp Dodge in Johnston.
